Both Windows 7 and Windows 10 usage increased in June 2016

Net Market Sharehas just released their data for June 2016 and things continue to look up for Microsoft where operating system usage is concerned.

For the month of June 2016, 19.14% of users used a device runningWindows 10which is up from the 17.43% in May and 15.34% in April. In fact, usage of Windows 10 has continually increased since its launch and has seen an impressive 8% growth in the last six months alone.

Interestingly, adoption of the old Windows 7 operating system also grew in June to 49.05% and was in fact the most-used out of all of the operating systems studied. Windows 7 usage, for the most part, had decreased since the launch of Windows 10 in late July 2015 from 60.73% to 47.82% in April 2016. It then jumped back up to 48.57% in May. A reason for this could be the decrease in Windows XP usage over the same time period. It would make sense that users of that old operating system would upgrade to the not-as-old Windows 7.

Windows 8.1 activity has also decreased over the past few months, likely due to Microsoft’s free (and heavily encouraged) upgrade to Windows 10.

From most-used to least-used operating systems in June 2016 we have Windows 7 at 49.05%, Windows 10 at 19.14%, Windows XP at 9.78%, Windows 8.1 at (ironically) 8.01%, and Apple’s MAC OS X 10.11 at 4.93%. “Other” operating systems made up the remaining 9.10%.

Microsoft is currently providing users of computers running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 with a free upgrade to the new Windows 10 operating system. The offer is set to expire on the 29th of this month andMicrosoft has recently confirmed that they have no plans to extend the upgrade offer beyond that date. After July 29th, users running any previous version of Windows will need to pay for the Windows 10 operating system themselves.
