Today, Microsoft acquired Revolution Analytics for an undisclosed amount. Revolution Analytics provides businesses with services and software for “R;” a programming language used throughout the world for predictive and statistical analytic information. Microsoft explained the reason for the acquisition further in a blog post:

This acquisition will help customers use advanced analytics within Microsoft data platforms on-premises, in hybrid cloud environments and on Microsoft Azure. By leveraging Revolution Analytics technology and services, we will empower enterprises, R developers and data scientists to more easily and cost effectively build applications and analytics solutions at scale.

At a press event in October 2014, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella showed his appreciation for using Linux as an operating system for its Microsoft Azure cloud service. Microsoft also used “R” to develop game match-making capabilities for Xbox Live and looks to use “R” on other Microsoft projects in the future. Revolution Analytics will continue to expand upon and maintain its Revolution R project lineup, even for non-Windows platforms like Linux and Mac. This acquisition should also boost Microsoft’s Azure cloud service as well as boost future Xbox Live capabilities. What do you think of Microsoft’s buyout of Revolution Analytics?
