Microsoft browsers lose another 40 million users as Firefox climbs back

With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft Edge saw many improvements such assupport for popular extensionslike AdBlock. Despite the great featuresthat came with the update, a Net Applications report shows that 40 million users appear to be leaving the Microsoft browser (via ComputerWorld.)

Overall, according to a Net Applications report obtained by ComputerWorld, the overall combined user share of both Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge was at 28.4% in October, which is a 2.3% drop compared to last month’s numbers. Mozilla Firefox, meanwhile, experienced a 2% increase in user share at 11.1%, possibly due to Edge users choosing an alternate browser. Google Chrome’s share, in the same interval, was at 55% in October, for a 0.6% increase over last month’s numbers.

Additionally, as seen in the chart above, the overall number of users of Microsoft’s browsers continue to fall. The all-time high was 800 million users in December of last year, and October brought an all-time low of about 466 million users. Again, this continues the pattern and brings Edge and Internet Explorer’s user share down 40 million users from September’s number of 506 million users. It is worth noting, however, that these numbers in terms of millions come from ComputerWorld, which took Net Applications percentage data and cross-referenced it based on the total number of Windows PC’s worldwide.
