Microsoft opens Office 365 datacenters in Canada

Today, Microsoft announced the general availability ofa new Office 365 datacenter regionin Canada. The new Canadian datacenter region will help Canadian corporations and government agencies meet strict security and compliance standards now that their Office 365 data is being stored within their national borders, while providing to all of the other security certifications Microsoft has garnered for Office 365 in general.

In an Office 365 blog post, an Office 365 spokesperson wrote:

The new datacenter region adds in-country data residency, failover and disaster recovery for core customer data at rest to customers in Canada. Canadian customers continue to have access to the full breadth of productivity and collaboration services available in Office 365 today.

The datacenter region is actually comprised of two datacenters, one in Toronto and one in Quebec City. Today’s news also comes on the heels ofMicrosoft expanding datacenter regionsin Japan, Australia, and India. The increasing number of international datacenter regions will help make the case of continued Office 365 growth among foreign governments and corporations who follow strict compliance guidelines.
