Big data has been a buzz word in the tech world for some time now, but frequently the concept has little to do with people on an individual level. Microsoft looks to change how big data affects people starting with Office Delve, combining machine learning and big data into an enterprise grade social graph. Now that all those other buzz phrases have been used here is what Office Delve really is; a place where you are connected to the different pieces of information located in different places around the internet.

Documents could be stored in OneDrive, email attachments, or shared via links, but Office Delve aims to bring relevant documents to your feed so you don’t get lost in data. Delve also accesses data from Yammer, Sharepoint, and Office 365 video content to bring relevant information above the noise. Most people working today have several different places they communicate with colleagues, instead of creating a new form of communication Microsoft wants to unify the existing modes of communication.

All of this amazing analysis work is done with the Office Graph which uses machine learning to map the connections between people, documents, and data. Mapping the connections happens with existing data which companies are creating every day. Office Delve will help companies extract value from existing workflows to save time hunting for documents or not being kept in the loop.

The days of long chains of emails back and forth are hopefully numbered. Office Delve will help employees to understand what is relevant to them and where the necessary documents are located. Perhaps a new training video has been created and should be viewed by you, but you were not included on the original email. Office Delve could see the activity of people who you work with viewing this company training video, then bring the video to your feed so you can be trained too. This is one example of how machine learning and big data help avoid gaps in business.
