Microsoft Research has released an ambitious research project dubbed Rich Interactive Narratives (RIN). It seems like a great way to educate people on landmarks and a great interactive way to explore history. The Microsoft RIN project combines storytelling with visual and audio technology to create an intense exploration experience. It looks like a massive undertaking by Microsoft Research.

The RIN research project has already been implemented in the Everest Project by GlacierWorks. GlacierWork’s Everest Project shows the change over time to the glaciers located in the valleys that surround Mount Everest and how climate change has affected the Himalayan region. The Everest Project is a great example of RIN.

Honestly, I do not thoroughly understand the entirety of RIN, but I am just starting to learn more about it as I work my way through RIN Studio, a RIN Authoring tool that Microsoft Research has released to the public. RIN Studio allows you to create your own RIN without the need to code; which is great, because I have no idea how to code. You can create your own RIN story and publish your story to the Windows Store as an app.

For more technical information, check out the RIN websites in the links below and try your hand at making your own RIN by downloading RIN Studio in the download link below!
