Major Nelson posted the deal on twitter this morning, which lets you buy an online code for a 12-month membership to Xbox Live for $39.99, a discount of 33%. The discount is only available for the 12-month membership as an Online Game Code. So there is no discount for either physical cards or the three and seven month memberships.

The main purpose of Xbox Live Gold membership is to enable online multiplayer for your Xbox One and Xbox 360 games. But Gold members also get free titles every month under the Games with Gold program and exclusive discounts on games and add-on content through the weekly Deals with Gold. Games with Gold recently became a greater value afterit was announcedthat all future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be playable on Xbox One via backward compatibility.
