During Build 2016 this past week, Microsoft’s (presumably) big jaw dropping announcement was the ability to run Bash shell on Windows 10. In a session hosted by Microsoft’s Scott Hanselman, we get an in-depth look at how this all works and what it all means.

The root filesystem of Ubuntu itself was provided to Windows 10 (minus the kernel). In other words, this is not a virtual machine, nor is this cygwin, rather this is “the sweet spot” in the middle as Scott Hanselman explains. “We are running the Ubuntu binaries on top of essentially the NT kernel — also known as the Windows subsystem for Linux,” Microsoft’s Russ Alexander states during the session. Microsoft expects this to roll out to Windows Insiders “within the next two weeks” allowing developers to tinker with the Linux command line on Windows 10.
