When the year 2017 comes around, Microsoft will be making plans to release two important updates. For quite some time, we’ve been hearing rumors of such plans, and now Microsoft’s Nathan Mercer has stated as such in a recent blog post.

The rumored updates areRedstone 2and Redstone 3. We’ve heard that one will focus more on the mobile side of things, while the other will tend to the desktop. We expect Redstone 2 to be the mobile centric update designed to make Windows 10 Mobile competitive as an operating system.

We should also hear more about therumored Surface Phoneas well, but expect that before the release of Redstone 2. Furthermore, it should be noted that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is the final major update of 2016. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise seeing as Microsoft has been working on making this update possible since 2015.

Here’s what Mercer had to say via ablog post:

“Today’s release of Windows 10, version 1607 is initially considered the Current Branch (CB) and will become Current Branch for Business (CBB) in about four months from today. For a list of Windows 10 versions by servicing option, see Windows 10 release information. For more information about these servicing options, see Windows 10 servicing options for updates and upgrades. Windows 10, version 1607 is our third Windows 10 feature update released.Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.”

Redstone 2 is expected in the early parts of 2017, while Redstone 3 should be released around August to September of the same year.
